Our Roots
A local group of women, Kappa Sigma Theta, was formed in 1903 and marked as the first sorority on campus. In the 1940s, the college administration opened the campus to national groups, and Kappa Sigma Theta immediately petitioned Pi Beta Phi. The group officially became the Washington Gamma Chapter in 1948 after installation by past Grand President Amy Burnham Onken, Illinois Epsilon. After the Initiation Ceremony, the Inez Smith Soule Alumnae Club hosted a buffet in the reception room of Anderson Hall. The installation banquet was held in the crystal ballroom of the Hotel Wintrop, with more than 250 local and visiting Pi Phis present.Collegiate Chapter Leadership
