Our Roots

Colorado Alpha was the first Pi Phi chapter in the state, officially installed in 1884 by Iowa Beta Helena Stidger Dorr and Iowa Alpha Dessie Rodgers Widner.

Supporting Sisters’ Dreams

Chapter-specific scholarship funds support collegiate chapter members as they pursue their academic dreams and professional goals. By giving to a scholarship fund, donors can directly impact their own chapter sisters and open doors that might not have been possible otherwise.

Icie Macy Hoobler, Ph.D.

Physiologist and Biochemist

Icie Hoobler was a physiologist, biochemist and nutrition researcher whose work helped advance the understanding of maternal and child health. After teaching food chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, Icie was appointed director of the Nutrition Research Project at the Merrill-Palmer School for Motherhood and Child Development. She led the laboratory for more than 30 years, publishing 300 scientific articles and several books that contributed to the growing body of research on nutrition and child development.

Despite facing gender-based discrimination, Icie became the first woman to chair a local section of the American Chemical Society. Her contributions to science and public health earned her numerous honors throughout her career, and she was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 1984.

Icie was initiated in 1914.

Marilyn Van Derbur is an author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker who rose to national prominence after being crowned Miss Colorado in 1957 and Miss America in 1958. Following her year as Miss America, she built a successful career in public speaking. She was the television spokeswoman for AT&T’s “The Bell Telephone Hour” and was the television hostess for the Miss America Pageant for five years.
In 1975, Marilyn founded the Marilyn Van Derbur Motivational Institute, which developed educational and motivational programs for businesses, organizations and conventions. She was also named Outstanding Woman Speaker in America and was the first woman to win the Speaker’s Hall of Fame award in 1980.

Marilyn was initiated in 1956.
