Author
Sue Grafton was one of the most widely read mystery writers of her generation, best known for the Alphabet series—a sequence of detective novels beginning with “A Is for Alibi” in 1982 and running through “Y Is for Yesterday,” published in 2017. Before finding major success as a mystery author, she wrote screenplays for television movies. Her novels have sold more than ten million copies and were translated in 26 languages. The Alphabet series books spent an aggregate of nearly 400 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.
The protagonist of the Alphabet series was private investigator Kinsey Millhone, set in the fictional California city of Santa Teresa. At a time when women in crime fiction were largely relegated to powerless victim or femme fatale roles, Sue helped reshape the genre by putting a capable, yet complicated, self-reliant woman at the helm of her work. She received numerous literary awards throughout her career, including the Grand Master award from the Mystery Writers of America in 2009, and the Crime Writers’ Association in Britain gave her its highest honor, the Diamond Dagger, for lifetime achievement in 2008.
Sue was initiated in 1958.
